Definition of Vocabulary

Vocabulary is the collection of words that a person knows and uses in a particular language. It is the foundation of communication, because without words, it is impossible to express ideas, share information, or understand others. Vocabulary can be divided into two main types: receptive vocabulary (the words we understand when we read or listen) and productive vocabulary (the words we can actively use when we speak or write).

Example:

  • Receptive: A learner reads the word “innovation” in a text and understands its meaning.

  • Productive: The learner says, “Innovation is important for business growth.”

This shows that vocabulary is not just about knowing the meaning of words, but also about being able to use them effectively in communication.
