The difference between coherence & cohesion

The different between Coherence and Cohesion

Cohesion and coherence are two different things. A text is cohesive if its elements are linked together. A text is coherent if it makes sense. However, a text may be cohesive ( linked together), but incoherent (meaningless)cohesion refers to connectivity in a text, but coherence refers to how easy it is to understand the writing. While coherence means the connection of ideas at the idea level, cohesion means the connection of ideas at the sentence level. On the one hand, coherence refers to the “rhetorical” aspects of your writing, which include developing and supporting your argument (e.g. thesis statement development), synthesizing and integrating readings, organizing and clarifying ideas. The cohesion of writing, on the other hand, focuses on the “grammatical” aspects of writing.

The important of Coherence and Cohesion

cohesion and coherence are important aspect of the structure of academic writing as they have an influence on the readability and logical flow of the argument of a text cohesion refers to the logical flow and connection in a written text and is achieved through the use of devices to link sentence to the next. coherence refers to the unity or togetherness of the text as a whole and is achieved thorough the effective grouping and arrangement of ideas in a logical order

Coherence is an essential quality for good academic writing. In academic writing, the flow of ideas from one sentence to the next should be smooth and logical. Without cohesion, the reader will not understand the main points that you are trying to make. It also hampers readability. Cohesion necessarily precedes coherence. There is a difference between the two terms: cohesion is achieved when sentences are connected at the sentence level, where as coherence is achieved when ideas are connected. In addition, cohesion focuses on the grammar and style of your paper.
